Raditz came to Earth to search for Kakkarot, heading for the highest power level. Although he found Piccolo instead, he tried to battle Raditz but he was overpowered. Raditz flew off and found Kakkarot on Master Roshi's island with Krillin, Bulma and Gohan. Goku had no idea who Raditz was, so he explained that he was his brother and a Saiyan. Raditz couldn't understand why Goku had not fulfilled his mission of exterminating all the life forms on Earth.  He learnt that he had had a near fatal head injury when he was young causing him to forget his mission and he also had his tail permanently removed. Goku refused to join the rest of the Saiyans so Raditz took Gohan and flew off. Raditz shut Gohan up in his Saiyan pod because he could no longer stand his crying. Goku and Piccolo soon caught up with Raditz and began to fight. Raditz was easily winning over Goku and Piccolo's combined might. Goku grabbed Raditz's tail, paralysing him. Raditz pleaded with Goku to spare him, promising that he would leave Earth. Goku believed his brother and let go of his tail. Raditz was, of course, lying and took this opportunity to attack Goku off guard. Raditz was about to kill Goku when Gohan exploded out of the pod and head butted Raditz's chest. Raditz had never been hurt like that before and Gohan's power level was so high. Raditz would have to kill Gohan, as, with proper training, he would be a threat. Just as Raditz was about to zap him Goku grabbed Raditz and held him back. Raditz couldn't break free; Gohan's blow had weakened him. Piccolo charged up his attack, Raditz checked his scouter and realised he couldn't survive the attack. Piccolo shot his Special Beam Cannon at the two Saiyans. Raditz and Goku collapsed on the floor. Raditz couldn't understand why Goku was willing to sacrifice his life for the Planet Earth. Piccolo explained that on Earth they have Dragonballs and when you bring all seven Dragonballs together, you are granted any wish you wanted. He told Raditz that Goku's friends would wish him back to life. Raditz then explained that his scouter also functioned as a communicator and two more Saiyans would reach Earth in one year and that they are much more powerful than him. He knew that Prince Vegeta and Nappa would be interested in the Dragonballs.
