Nappa And Vegeta's Saiyan Army Barracks ©
Our View
Well, firstly I think that I should point out that most of cutting and censoring was done during the Saiya-jin Saga and Namek Saga when Saban were still working Dragonball Z with FUNimation. That's right up until some where in the Ginyu Saga when all the voices changed. You know when it is because one episode Vegeta's face is clean, the next it's got blood over it. So I think probably it's Saban who censored most of it, but I'm only guessing. Also, Viz, the company behind publishing the english language Dragonball and Dragonball Z manga started to censor that too when parents complained. But anyways this whole censoring thing really pisses me off sometimes, especially when it screws with the plot. Like when Dodoria kills Kargo, and in the manga when Goku takes off Bulma's pants in Dragonball looking for her balls, they censor that out and then later in the story Goku says he did take them off. But I guess there are some things they just can't show like nudity. But when you think about, it's nothing kids haven't seen before. The problem is that I guess up until now ppl see all cartoons as for little kids, when Dragonball Z is really aimed at teenagers to 20 somethings. Surely with the case of the manga they could have just put "not suitable for young kids" or something on the cover. But in FUNi's defence I have to say that the censoring and cutting has got a lot less since the Saiya-jin Saga. Compare the Saiya-jin Saga fight to the Frieza Saga fight and there's a big difference. Also the music has improved, the Trunks music I thought was quite cool and alot better than the previous stuff in the Saiya-jin Saga. But I think it was a bad idea to take out Spirit Vs Spirit when Gohan goes SSJ2, that really went with it, but I haven't heard what they put there instead in the US, but my general opinion is that Spirit Vs Spirit was better. Basically I think right now that the things they are cutting, besides the nudity, are blood that moves, like down a face or coughed up. Although spit with a little blood being coughed up seems to be okay. And also hands going through ppl, but beams going through ppl are okay and when Krillin got stabed by Frieza's horn. So I don't really get what difference a hand makes but then I'm not the one censoring it. Anyway I can see that sometimes FUNi have to censor some stuff, but that doesn't mean I have to like it. And lets face it, without FUNi, there probably wouldn't be any Dragonball Z over here.
Unfortunately, for us in the UK, we don't get the same as the US anymore, it is by AB Productions. The voices are different, they are okay though. But most notciably the music is different. The music in our version is poor. Almost as bad as the music in the Saiya-jin Saga, and Gohan's SSJ2, for the UK was not done well. They used the same old crappy music, although the scream and build up was ok. My main problem now is with the music, why can't we just have the same music as FUNi? It is far better. To be honest I don't see the point in AB re - doing the voices and music anyway.
I share bascially the same views as Vegeta on censoring. It really annoys me when they cut something, and it's reallly obvious, like when Raditz kicks Gohan, one minute he's by Raditz's foot, then he is mysteriously rolling away. Whats the point? we know whats going on. Someone really should tell Viz & FUNi that Dragonball Z is an anime series, and anime isn't made for young ppl (except for stuff like Pokémon & Digimon etc.) Like Vegeta said, Anime was created for teenagers and 20 somethings, but when adults see it, they think it's a cartoon, so they don't expect there to be any violence in it. Anime does rarely not contain violence, it's almost a trait of Anime. Viz are equally as stupid, If you go to their website, DB & DBZ are on `Viz Kids' do these companys even know anything? I read somewhere from Cartoon Network - "We are sorry there has been a large gap since the last new episodes of DBZ, but they have to be translated from Japanese before they can be aired in England" Thats funny, I could swear that America and other places are airing the Cell Saga, so that proves how much Cartoon Network really know. Basically, whats the point in blurring frames when someone get kicked, then they fall back with the force of the kick, are we suppost to think nothing happened, and they were just moving back a bit? I can understand them wanting to censor some things, like nudity, but not fighting, thats what makes Dragonball Z.
Well, I just found out that Viz have made an uncensored version of the manga, so thats a bit better, and you can buy uncut DVDs and videos now. But that doesn't help me, I'm in the UK, there are no DBZ videos or DVDs at all!
